Durbin Statement on STB Denial of Canadian National Request to Accelerate EJ&E Decision

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today issued the following statement after the Surface Transportation Board denied Canadian National's request for an expedited decision on the company's proposed purchase of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern (EJ&E) Railway.

"Canadian National's demands for an expedited review were an irresponsible show of force and a clear attempt to silence the Illinoisans that will be affected by their proposed purchase of the EJ&E. I applaud the Surface Transportation Board for today's decision to put their established evaluation process over corporate interests.

"Last month, Canadian National indicated that they intended to seek legal relief to challenge an unfavorable ruling by the Surface Transportation Board. Their argument is a weak one. I will continue to do everything in my power to block their attempts to pressure the Surface Transportation Board for an accelerated review."
