Economic Development Funds for Hazard Water Storage Tank

Congressman Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) announced today that the City of Hazard will receive a $1,000,000 Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant for the construction of a two million gallon water storage tank. Designed to accommodate the region's growing economic base, the new storage system and related equipment will ensure local homes and businesses have access to an adequate source of water.

"With top-notch healthcare services and continuing education programs, Perry County is increasingly important to the continued economic growth of our region. This investment ensures that Hazard-area businesses and residents have access to state-of-the-art water and sewer infrastructure," stated Rogers. "The Economic Development Administration has created countless opportunities for the people of Appalachia, and I place a high value on the partnership between southern and eastern Kentucky officials and this important federal agency."

The Economic Development Administration, housed within the U.S. Department of Commerce, works to generate and retain jobs and stimulate industrial and commercial growth in economically distressed areas of the country. The EDA has directed over $24.1 million in federal funds to the Fifth Congressional District since 2001. By expanding the capacity of Hazard to provide sewer and water service, this project is expected to stimulate enough new businesses to create 140 jobs in the region and leverage $67.2 million in private investment. The total cost for the new storage tank is expected to be $2.4 million.
