Issue Position: Healthcare

Issue Position

What I believe:

* Healthcare (like education) must be established as a right, not a privilege.

* We must make every effort to immediately provide affordable health coverage for all American children.

* The United States should move toward a universal, single-payer health insurance system, providing coverage to every American.

What I have done:

* Aggressively defended Georgia's critical PeachCare children's healthcare program. Click here for video.

* Introduced legislation to redistribute funds from states that enjoy S-CHIP (PeachCare) surpluses to cover the massive shortfalls faced by 14 states, including Georgia.

* Voted for legislation to add four-million children nationwide to S-CHIP.

* Cosponsored the Stroke Treatment and Ongoing Prevention Act, which passed the House. It will provide for a more aggressive campaign to promote stroke prevention and increase the number of stroke patients who seek immediate treatment.

* Voted for the successful bill which directs the federal government to negotiate lower Medicare drug prices with pharmaceutical companies.

* Cosponsored the Melanie Blocker-Stokes Postpartum Depression Research and Care Act, which passed the House.

What I will do:

* Continue to push for expansion of health coverage for children nationwide.

* Continue to pursue additional funds for Georgia's critical PeachCare program.

* Strongly support efforts to achieve universal healthcare in the United States.

* Continue to support legislative efforts to combat threats to public health worldwide.

* Continue to vote for targeted funding of research, development, and public awareness campaigns for diseases, disorders, and conditions about which there is insufficient public knowledge.
