Issue Position

Access to quality affordable health care continues to be a priority of mine. It is unconscionable that in America today more than 43.6 million Americans are without health insurance.

We need to focus on this ever-growing problem and to correct the flaws of a system that penalizes health consumers who purchase health insurance policies for themselves and their families by shifting the cost of the uninsured onto their backs.

The lack of affordable health care is a problem that affects the health of all of America. Employers and employees fear the looming and growing cost of health insurance each year and how changes in their policies will affect their families. Something must be done.

The federal government must continue to invest in the health of America. I ardently support the National Institutes of Health and health care research programs. This research is the key to opening the doors to the cures for Parkinson's disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's and so many other diseases afflicting so many. I worry that as this Administration continues to extend tax cuts to the wealthy, we deplete the federal budget and opportunities to fund research that could wield spectacular results.
