Sen. Cornyn Promotes Healthy Lifestyles at 8th Annual Back-to-School Children's Health Day
Meets with Houston Families and Discusses Importance of Preventive Services Offered at Health Fairs and Through Programs Like SCHIP
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today attended the 8th Annual Back-To-School Children's Health Day expo at the Almeda Mall. The health fair, hosted by Families Under Urban and Social Attack (FUUSA), is held annually to prepare area students for the school year, offering preventive health services such as screenings and immunizations.
"As Houston students prepare to return to school Monday, there is no better time for children and parents to stock up on health tips and receive preventive services like immunizations and screenings to help keep them healthy throughout the school year. I had the opportunity to meet with a number of Houston families and students at the Children's Health Day expo today and discuss with them the importance of being proactive when it comes to our health. With Texas ranked sixth in the nation in cases of childhood obesity, we have a long way to go in helping our children lead healthier and more active lives," Sen. Cornyn said.
"On my part, I have been working in the Senate to pass a number of initiatives to prevent diabetes and obesity and discourage bad habits like smoking to prevent heart disease. I also continue to support the State Children's Health Insurance Program and have worked to boost enrollment of eligible children across the state. SCHIP provides thousands of Texas children with health care and preventive services each year that they would otherwise be unable to afford. But there are still many more children across the state who are eligible for SCHIP coverage but have yet to enroll. I will continue to work to educate eligible families about the valuable health care options available to them under SCHIP."
