First, it should be known that our troops in Iraq serve their country honorably each and every day, and I hold their service to America in the highest regard.
I support our troops and believe we owe it to them to support them not only when they return to America but with their future health care needs as well.
The overall situation in Iraq, however, concerns me greatly. I thought that we should have waited for weapons inspectors to complete their work in that country before we decided a plan of action, including military action. I believe that we rushed to war, without fully comprehending the complexity of taking such action and the consequences that would result.
In October 2002, I votes against the Iraq War resolution. I was concerned that we engaged in military action too quickly and without a well-thought out plan. To date, the Iraq War has cost the U.S. taxpayer roughly $319 billion. There is no end in sight.
The time has come for us to develop an honorable exit strategy in Iraq and to bring America's troops back home safely.
