Issue Position: Judiciary Committee

Issue Position

As a member of the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties subcommittee, I take great pride in my role of fostering legislation that protects our civil liberties as granted in our Constitution.

Civil Liberties

While serving in Congress I have constantly fought to protect the civil liberties of all Americans. I steadfastly support legislation to guard against all forms of discrimination, including in the workplace and I consistently support civil rights programs and legislation to uphold the system of fairness guaranteed by our Constitution.

Hate Crimes

As a member of Congress who represents Americans from diverse backgrounds, my constituents are possible targets of violence due to their race, ethnicity, beliefs, and sexual orientation. These crimes are unacceptable in a country where everyone is guaranteed equal rights. I will continue to push for tough hate crime laws that punish those who choose to violate the rights of Americans because of their differences.

Voting Rights

No right is more precious in a democratic society than the right to vote. With the advent of modern technology, our state and country have been fortunate enough to take part in an innovative system of electronic voting that can secure the right for all citizens to be heard. Yet, even with this ground-breaking technology, we cannot afford in this country to allow the touch-screen to have the last word. I will adamantly support legislation allowing voters' to verify their selection before the submission of their ballot.
