Senator Cornyn Comments on President Bush's Speech On the Future of Iraq

'A plan worthy of the support from the American people and nations around the world'

SAN ANTONIO-U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement Monday regarding the President's speech at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on the future of Iraq:

"In his speech, President Bush effectively laid out a clear and specific plan for the future of Iraq , a plan worthy of support from the American people and nations around the world.

"There are several critical elements to the success of a free and prosperous Iraq , including transferring authority to a sovereign Iraqi government, improving security, enlisting additional international support, and ensuring the tools necessary for economic independence. And I strongly support the President and our coalition partners as they work to transform these goals into reality for the Iraqi people there, and our security here.

"Helping Iraqis create a more secure, stable and self-governing nation is a difficult effort, but it is worthwhile-and it is working. Democracy and liberty must be allowed to take root without interference, and history will not look kindly on those who play the politics of the moment in this heated election season, rather than focus on the goal of a peaceful, stable Iraq .

"President Bush has displayed strong and decisive leadership, and I'm confident that he is determined to finish the job we started in Iraq and continue fighting and winning the overall war on terror."
