Durbin Statement on Passage of Major Housing Measure

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) made the following statement today, after the Senate passed a major housing package that will help hundreds of thousands of at-risk American families keep their homes; help other families avoid foreclosure in the future; and aid communities as they recover from record foreclosures.

"At the heart of America's economic problems is the housing crisis. We have all heard the statistics - 8,500 homes foreclosed upon each day; nearly 750,000 homes under foreclosure in the last year alone - but what's too often overlooked is that behind every one of those numbers is a family in crisis as well."

"I believe the passage of today's bipartisan housing bill may start to turn the tide of foreclosures affecting so many families and virtually every community in the nation. While it is far from a complete fix, it is recognition that this is a crisis which is not capable of healing itself."

"And I hope this measure will bringing some assurance and confidence to consumers across America that this housing crisis can be put behind us and this economy can move forward."

"I hope the President quickly signs this bill into law so communities in Illinois and across the country can receive the help they desperately need."
