Wildfire Safety

Despite the abundant rain that the Black Hills has received recently, warmer and drier weather has increased the danger of wildfires as the summer progresses. Finer fuels such as grasses, pine needles and twigs are beginning to dry out in the absence of moisture, providing the opportunity for larger fuels such as downed trees to burn.

Residents and visitors are reminded to continue being aware of conditions and familiarize themselves with local fire restrictions and burn bans.

Help prevent wildfires by following these important tips:

· Be especially careful with campfires. Build campfires in designated fire rings away from combustible materials and overhanging branches. Before leaving the area, make sure campfires are extinguished and cool to the touch. Never leave a campfire unattended.

· Never dispose of charcoal briquettes without soaking them or making sure that they have no heat in them. Briquettes can hold heat for several days.

· Do not throw cigarette butts out of your vehicle. Smoke only in areas cleared of dry vegetation and crush cigarettes completely out.

· Park your vehicle away from dry grass. Make sure chainsaws, ATVs and motorcycles have spark arrestors.

· Follow local restrictions and burn bans. Check with the local fire protection agency for the latest restriction before going to the outdoor recreation area.

Meade County, SD Fire Ban

An open fire ban is in effect between July 28 and August 18. This includes the town of Sturgis and all private campgrounds. Open fire ban means any outdoor fire, including campfires, that is not contained within a fully enclosed fire box or structure. This ban does not include charcoal grills or liquid fuel grills.
