Pelosi Statement on Retirement of Congressman Jim Turner

January 8, 2004

Washington, D.C.-House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Retirement of Congressman Jim Turner.

"Jim Turner's retirement from the House is a great loss to the Congress. He has been an outstanding Representative for his district, and a great asset for Texas and the nation.

"Jim's understanding of homeland security and defense policy are extraordinary. I was pleased to appoint him as the top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee, where he has done exemplary work to protect our country. I look forward to continuing to work with him on homeland security issues.

"Jim's intellect, integrity, and idealism will be sorely missed. His retirement is a striking example of how the Republicans' shameful partisan redistricting in Texas will have serious consequences for the entire nation."
