Sen. Cornyn: Contrast Between Two Parties On Gas Prices Could Not Be Clearer

Senate Republicans Vote to Stay at Work, Pass a Bipartisan Energy Bill, Democrats Vote to Go Home

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn expressed his disappointment today with the decision by Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid to adjourn the U.S. Senate Thursday night for the month of August without doing anything to address the number one economic issue facing our country: high gas prices. Senator Cornyn, along with virtually every Republican Senator present, voted against the adjournment resolution which was passed last night by a majority of Democratic Senators.

"For weeks now, the American people, including my constituents in Texas, have been looking to Congress and demanding answers on rising gas prices. It's deeply disappointing, and frankly a disgrace, that the Democratic leadership has shut down Congress for a month without first passing a bipartisan energy bill.

"Senate Republicans have consistently presented real initiatives that would boost domestic energy production, bring down gas prices, and help to free our country from its dangerous dependence on foreign oil. We have wanted a real debate and were hopeful Congress could work in a bipartisan manner as the American people expect us to. Instead, Senate Democratic Leader Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to even schedule a vote on more domestic energy production.

"The contrast from Thursday night could not be clearer - every Republican Senator, except one, present voted to stay at work and pass a bipartisan bill, while every Democratic Senator present voted to go home for a month with the job left undone. Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi are playing politics with the pocketbooks of my constituents in Texas and Americans across the country who deserve better from their Congress."
