Rep. Gillibrand Announces Increased Travel Reimbursements for Veterans
Today, local Congresswoman announced that veterans eligible for mileage reimbursements will be receiving almost double the reimbursement rate, the first increase in 30 years. The beneficiary travel reimbursement rate will change from 11 cents per mile to 28.5 cents per mile, effective immediately.
"I was proud to vote in favor of this increase in funding as part of this year's Appropriations bill, "said Congresswoman Gillibrand, a Member of the House Armed Services Committee. "When I meet with my Veterans Steering Committee, I hear about the financial strain that our veterans are facing driving, in some cases, two hours or more to reach a VA hospital. This increase is long overdue, and I am thankful that my colleagues joined me in supporting this important measure."
Veterans may be eligible for this benefit if they have a service-connected disability rating of 30% or more, are traveling for treatment of a service-connected condition, receive a VA pension, or are traveling for scheduled compensation or pension examination. Veterans should contact the New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs by calling toll-free 1-888-VETS NYS (1-888-838-7697) for further information about the benefit and eligibility criteria.
