Senate Appropriations Committee Delays Consideration of Emergency Appropriations Bill for Iowa Flood Victims

Senator Chuck Grassley released the following statement after the Senate Appropriations Committee announced that it would not consider an emergency appropriations bill for flood victims until September.

"I'm disappointed that the Appropriations Committee decided to forego providing much needed assistance to Iowans before the August congressional recess. Congress doesn't seem to understand the devastation. We've got an emergency and Congress needs to respond. I was chairman of the Finance Committee after Hurricane Katrina. We treated the victims of the Gulf Coast with quick and fair action. We passed $60 billion of appropriations bills within a week of returning to Washington and a tax relief bill was signed by the President within 3 weeks. These were clean bills that weren't loaded down with controversial extraneous provisions. We only ask that Congress give Iowans and those in the Midwest the same consideration that they gave the victims of other major disasters. Nothing more, nothing less. And, if my colleagues doubt me that this is an emergency, I'm in Iowa every weekend and I'll be happy to show them around."
