Michigan Economy Needs Action Now
With this past June marking the sixth consecutive month of job losses nationwide, and the eighth consecutive year of job losses here in Michigan, Congressional candidate Gary Peters today called for immediate action to get the Michigan's economy moving again.
"Oakland County has paid a heavy for the past eight years of unfair trade policies and economic mismanagement from Congressman Knollenberg and President Bush," said Peters. "We need to act now to jumpstart our economy here in Michigan, cut taxes today for middle class families who are struggling, and immediately invest in new jobs and industries like alternative energy and next-generation vehicles."
Even though Michigan has lost over 300,000 jobs since 2001, including nearly 94,000 jobs in 2008 alone, Congressman Knollenberg has continued to support President Bush's failed policies of putting Big Oil profits ahead of auto industry jobs, supporting unfair trade deals that pit American workers against sweatshops, and giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas instead of investing in new jobs here at home.
Gary Peters is a former businessman and investment manager. As the commissioner of the Michigan Lottery from 2003 to 2007, Peters generated record revenues and dramatically increased the amount of funding for Michigan classrooms.
