Lucas Applauds New Community-Based Outpatient Clinics in Enid, Altus

Rep. Frank Lucas welcomes the announcement yesterday to build new community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC) Enid and Altus. This latest expansion of the current CBOC network will include 44 new clinics, including four in the state of Oklahoma, and will bring the total number of CBOC facilities to 782 across the country.

"I am proud to have worked closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs, David Wood, the Director of Oklahoma City Veterans Medical Center, and the veterans of Enid and Altus to help bring these clinics to their cities," stated Lucas. "And I look forward to more community-based outpatient clinics opening in the state of Oklahoma."

Currently, a veteran in Enid must drive up to two hours to reach the closest VA hospital if they become ill. Not only does this put a strain on veterans' bank accounts, especially with the recent spike in gas prices, but it means a long wait before treatment can be given.

"Our veterans have put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms we enjoy in this country," stated Lucas. "We must ensure the highest quality of medical care for them and these community-based outpatient clinics are a big step in the right direction."

Once the VA establishes the clinic, area doctors and nurses will donate their time or work for a reduced rate, to serve the healthcare needs of veterans in their area. These remote clinics will still have access to review patients' records stored at VA facilities across the country through a highly acclaimed records system ensuring accurate treatment.
