Chairman Markey's Statement on Senate's Climate Legislation, Bush Veto Threat

Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and the author of global warming legislation in the House, released the following statement on climate legislation currently being debated in the United States Senate, and the veto threat issued today by the White House:

"I commend Senators Boxer, Lieberman and Warner for their efforts to save the planet and end Washington's climate of inaction on climate change. The debate is historic because the need is so great and the opportunity is so large.

"Unfortunately, the Bush administration has yet again shown itself to be completely isolated on this issue. The right way to avoid climatic catastrophe is to take action now to cap carbon emissions, to invest in American ingenuity and jobs, and base policies on the latest science. The wrong way is to prevent the Congress from providing the necessary American leadership on this critical issue."
