Smith Statement on Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), a member of the House Pro-Life Caucus, today released the following statement regarding the 35th Anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling on the Roe v. Wade abortion case.
"President Ronald Reagan once said We cannot diminish the value of one category of human life - the unborn - without diminishing the value of all human life.' Never have those words meant more than today.
"Recent data has shown the number of abortions declined between 2000 and 2005 to the lowest total since 1976. This is good news, and is evidence the pro-life movement is having an effect. But the fact of the matter is we are approaching 50 million abortions since Roe v. Wade.
"Protecting life - both born and unborn - through our actions and efforts needs to be a priority for all who care about the generations yet to come," Smith said.
Data released last week by the Guttmacher Institute showed the number of abortions between 2000 and 2005 declined from 1.31 million to 1.21 million, the lowest total since 1976, which totaled 1.18 million abortions.
The House Pro-Life Caucus is made up of Members of Congress dedicated to promoting a pro-life message in Washington D.C. and throughout the nation.
