With the City of Buffalo submitting an application to host the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation Under 20 World Championships, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today urged USA Hockey, Inc. to accept Buffalo's bid and bring the world-class event to the city. The Under 20 World Championships attracts the top national Under-20 ice hockey teams from around the world, and could bring vital tourism dollars and economic boon to Western New Yorkan ideal location for the events, given its history of ice hockey support
Today, in a personal letter to USA Hockey, Inc. Executive Director Dave Ogrean, Schumer urged the federation to accept Buffalo's bid to host the 2011 Under 20 Championships, and bring the event to Western New York.
"Western New York has long been a hotbed of hockey enthusiasm, producing scores of first-rate players including Buffalo native and first round, first overall 2007 draft pick, Patrick Kane, as well as area native, Lee Stempniak (St. Louis Blues) who also plays for US National Men's Hockey Team," said Schumer. "Add to that its top-notch tourism industry and proximity to millions more hockey fans just across the border in Canada and you've got the perfect spot for a world-class hockey event. The City of Buffalo would welcome teams from every corner of the globe with open arms, and in exchange the event would inject much-needed tourism dollars into Western New York's economy."
The City of Buffalo is submitting application to host the 2011 International Hockey Federation Under 20 World Championships, an event that attracts the top national under 20 ice hockey teams from around the world, and Buffalo. Located right across the border from Canada, Western New York is imbued with a passion for ice hockey - from its diehard support for the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, to the thriving college and high school programs, to the thousands of young people and their parents who dedicate so much to this sport. Western New York has long been a hotbed of hockey enthusiasm, producing scores of first rate players including Buffalo native and first round, first overall 2007 draft pick, Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawk and winner of the coveted Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie of the 2007-2008 season.
Buffalo also offers a first-rate tourism infrastructure where visitors have access to architectural masterpieces, impressive theatres, art museums, a world-class symphony orchestra, an historic zoo, and multiple professional sports teams, as well as a variety of hotels, transportation options and top-notch restaurants.
