Moran Reminds Kansans of Steps to Claim Economic Stimulus Check

Congressman Jerry Moran today encouraged seniors and disabled veterans to file a 2007 tax return in order to receive an economic stimulus payment. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently reported that around 40,000 eligible Kansans have not yet completed the necessary paperwork in order to collect their rebate.

"I fear that many Kansans are unaware of the requirement to file a tax return to receive their payment," Moran said. "It is important we spread the word to make sure all eligible Kansans understand the process."

Congress passed the Economic Stimulus Act in February, which made most Americans eligible for a one-time government rebate check. While taxpayers have been receiving rebates since May, the IRS estimates there are more than five million potential recipients who will not receive a payment unless they file a 2007 tax return.

Moran is working with the IRS and organizations such as AARP Kansas to spread the word to Kansas seniors and veterans. The IRS plans to mail potentially eligible retirees and veterans a letter this summer that explains how to claim their check.

"AARP is committed to helping those who will benefit the most from the Economic Stimulus program," AARP Kansas State Director Maren Turner said. "We encourage people to make sure that their families, friends and neighbors have the information they need. They can visit our Web site at http://www.jerrymoran.house.gov/www.aarp.org/stimulus for easy to understand directions, answers to questions and scams to avoid."

To be eligible for the rebate, individuals must have at least $3,000 in qualifying income. Eligible income includes Social Security retirement, disability and survivor payments, as well as Veterans Affairs disability compensation, disability pension and survivor payments. To receive the rebate, individuals should file Form 1040A before October 15, even if they are normally not required to do so. Filing a tax return to receive a stimulus payment does not mean individuals will have to start filing tax returns again.
