CORNYN: HOLD GUILTY ACCOUNTABLE, AND KEEP AMERICA SAFE IN WAR ON TERROR

WASHINGTON-U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement Tuesday regarding a hearing of that committee with testimony by General Antonio Taguba, who wrote the report on the Iraq prison abuses:

"In his testimony, General Taguba made it clear that there is no policy in the United States military that allows for the less-than-humane treatment of detainees - whether enemy combatants, unlawful combatants or common criminals. We are absolutely committed to getting to the bottom of these terrible abuses and to making sure the guilty are held accountable.

"But we can't forget the context in which all of this is taking place - in the larger picture of the many other military troops serving honorably in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. A key part of winning the ongoing war on terror is getting essential information from detainees that could well protect America from the next 9/11.

"I'm confident that we will hold the responsible accountable for these prison abuses - and at the same time, we must focus on our greater and more important job of keeping America safe in this war on terror."
