Cornyn: President Signs Bill Sending Critical Funding To Troops

Defense supplemental legislation also expands G.I. Bill benefits for service members, their families

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement Monday after President Bush signed into law the defense supplemental funding bill for troops fighting in the war on terror. The legislation also contains a landmark expansion of G.I. Bill benefits for service members and their families, which Sen. Cornyn advocated and voted for:

"This supplemental legislation will provide critical, long-overdue funding for our troops serving in the war on terror. The bill will make sure those sacrificing in battlefields abroad for our security at home will have the necessary resources for their protection and their mission.

"I'm particularly encouraged that the landmark provisions to expand and modernize the G.I. Bill are now the law of the land. This bipartisan effort, which I strongly supported, will allow service members for the first time to transfer unused education benefits they have earned to children and spouses. These enhancements are a high priority for our all-volunteer force, and will support service members, their families and retention."
