Gov. Rounds Supports Supreme Court Ruling Against Gun Ban

Gov. Mike Rounds today announced his strong support for the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that a ban on handguns in Washington, DC, violates the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

"We think this ruling supports what most South Dakotans believe; that the Second Amendment clearly protects the rights of our citizens to bear arms," said Gov. Rounds.

"While this is a victory for our citizens and the protection of their constitutional rights, it should also be noted that four of the nine justices failed to recognize the clear direction our founding fathers wrote in the Second Amendment.

I've always believed the Second Amendment is clear and direct in its meaning. I can't imagine the framers of the Constitution meaning anything other than what is written in these words from the Second Amendment: A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
