Durbin Statement on Today's Supreme Court Ruling on Campaign Finance Laws

United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement today following the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in Davis vs. Federal Election Commission:candidates of modest means with not only impunity, but with the Constitutional blessing of this Court.

"As an author of the so-called Millionaire's Amendment, I find today's Supreme Court decision the product of a court removed from the reality of political life in America.

This decision defends the rights of the wealthiest to overwhelm candidates of modest means with not only impunity, but with the Constitutional blessing of this Court.

In the nation's Capital where "money talks" is the sad reality of too many governmental decisions, the Supreme Court has now enshrined this concept in our political campaigns.

To paraphrase another observation, this Supreme Court believes the wisdom of the Constitution protects the rights of both the wealthy and those of modest means to spend millions of their own money in the exercise of their right to free speech."
