Sen. Cornyn Commemorates Memorial Day With Texas Heroes

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today commemorated Memorial Day at several events in Texas. He started the day joining troops at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio for breakfast. He then attended Fort Sam Houston's Memorial Day ceremony and presented Gold Medals of Remembrance to children of fallen troops. The medal, which is awarded by the White House Commission on Remembrance, is the first of its kind to honor children. Lastly, Sen. Cornyn hosted a statewide sendoff for Texas students attending a U.S. Service Academy this fall.

"I had the opportunity to spend this Memorial Day with some of Texas' true heroes. I had the honor of presenting Gold Medals of Remembrance to children at Fort Sam Houston who have lost a parent in the War on Terror. These young people have demonstrated great strength and perseverance. They remind each of us that much has been sacrificed, not only on the battlefield but here at home, too, so that we can live each day in freedom and safety. I was joined at the ceremony by hundreds of local veterans, individuals who deserve our deepest gratitude and respect. I also met with many of our men and women in uniform serving at Fort Sam Houston. We shared breakfast together, and I let them know how grateful their country is for their selflessness and service.

"Finally, I hosted a sendoff for students from across the state who will be attending one of the U.S. Service Academies this fall. As terrorism remains a real and serious threat, and our country must continue to stand strong against it, these young men and women have chosen a challenging and honorable course. They will be our nation's future leaders and defenders, and I was honored to congratulate each of them for their accomplishments and wish them the best.

"I hope each of us can give thanks not only on Memorial Day, but every day for our men and women in uniform who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we hold so dearly."

Sen. Cornyn has made fighting for military personnel and veterans a top priority while in the U.S. Senate. As a member of the Armed Services Committee, he has successfully enacted legislation to expand health care and benefits for active duty service members and their families, particularly treatment and housing for wounded warriors. Sen. Cornyn, whose father served in the Air Force for 31 years, has also worked to make sure troops have the funding and equipment they need to fight and win the war on terror. He knows we can never do enough to repay those who have sacrificed for our nation, and remains dedicated to ensuring all military forces and veterans receive the health care access, services, and benefits they deserve.
