Capito, House Reaffirms Funding Support for Rural Schools

Reauthorization of ‘Secure Rural Schools' Program Included in Public Lands Act
With the support of Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, the House of Representatives today passed public lands legislation that will reauthorize the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000.

"So many of our rural school districts struggle with revenue shortages," said Capito. "Counties with large areas of un-taxable federal land face particularly difficult challenges and they're looking to the federal government for support."

"Thankfully, this bill will help off-set revenue shortfalls for many of these rural school districts. I hear regularly from school administrators about the needs of rural districts, and I'm encouraged by this bill's passage."

Capito is a co-sponsor HR 17, which provided the basis for the underlying language in the Secure Rural Schools measure passed today.

The legislation would extend support through 2011, and must now be approved by the US Senate.
