Peters Strongly Condemns Carter's Meeting with Hamas
Today, Congressional Candidate Gary Peters released a statement strongly condemning former President Jimmy Carter's meeting with Hamas:
"Hamas is a terrorist organization and until it renounces violence and recognizes Israel's right to exist, any meetings between Hamas and Americans are reprehensible and extremely counterproductive. That is why I strongly condemn President Carter's decision to meet with Hamas."
"As a Lieutenant Commander and a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist in the United States Navy Reserve, I had the chance to travel to the Middle East and gain an understanding of the region. My visit to Israel was one of the most moving experiences of my life. I was struck by the beauty of the land and the courage of the Israeli people, who live on the front lines of the War on Terror. My experience reinforced my belief that a strong, vibrant, and democratic Israel is vital to American national security interests."
Gary Peters' reserve duty included time in the Persian Gulf supporting Operation Southern Watch, and he served overseas during increased military activity following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
