Clyburn Hails Passage of Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement after passage of H.R. 6049, the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act of 2008.

"Today, the New Direction Congress continued its work on behalf of Americans who are struggling to pay high gas prices and make ends meet by passing a comprehensive tax incentive package that will lower our nation's dependence on foreign energy resources and extend tax breaks to hardworking American families.

"H.R. 6049 provides approximately $20 billion in tax incentives to invest in renewable energy and extends $27 billion in expiring tax provisions including the research and development tax credit, the State and local sales tax deduction, the deduction for out-of-pocket expenses for teachers, and the deduction for qualified tuition expenses.

"This New Direction Congress understands that tax cuts are benefits that should be enjoyed and shared by all Americans and not a select affluent few. Passage of this all-inclusive tax package reconfirms the unwavering commitment of this Congress to passing fair and equitable tax legislation that provides much needed assistance to everyday working Americans."
