Graves Votes to Give Missourians Relief from High Gas Prices

Legislation Would Inject 70,000 Barrels of Oil a Day into the Market

U.S. Congressman Sam Graves voted this week to suspend additions to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to give Missourians relief from high gas prices. The bill passed with bi-partisan support and will inject 70,000 additional barrels of oil a day into the market.

"High gas prices are hurting Missourians and making it more expensive for parents to drive their kids to school, and workers to drive to their jobs," said Graves. "This is a responsible step to give Missourians relief from the high prices they are paying at the pump."

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve Fill Suspension and Consumer Protection Act (H.R. 6022) is bi-partisan legislation that suspends the filling of the SPR until crude oil drops below $75 per barrel. Currently, the SPR is 97 percent full and is the largest emergency oil stockpile in the world.

"The additional 70,000 barrels of oil per day in the market will help ease the pain at the pump," Graves said. "However, this is only part of the solution. We need to pass a real energy bill that increases our domestic supply and weans us off of foreign oil."

H.R. 6022 passed with wide bi-partisan support 385-25.
