The American economy, and the global economy, continues to see unpredictable changes caused by raising oil prices, tightening of both commercial and consumer credit, and an increasing budget deficit. In response, the Congress passed and the President signed into law, an economic growth package that will inject about $152 million into the economy and deliver broad-based tax relief to nearly 132 million Americans. Among the initiatives included in this law are incentives for small business entrepreneurs to expand their ventures, invest in new equipment, and create more jobs. While this is certainly an important step, this continues to be a prolonged season of economic anxiety.
Trade is a critical part to southern California's economy and growth moving forward. Mexico and Canada are California's largest trading partner and the North American Free Trade agreement has ensured we have access to a wide range of goods and services as well as have a market for our goods and services to be exported. One in seven jobs in California is related to trade and the state leads the nation in export-related jobs. I have worked hard to expand free trade agreements during my time in Congress and look forward to continuing working for free and fair negotiations with other nations around the world.
