Foster Supports Tax Credits for Those Making Life Better for Our Troops

In showing his continued support for American troops and common-sense solutions to improving the federal tax code, Rep. Bill Foster joined as a co-sponsor on the Homefront Heroes Tax Relief Act today.

"At a time when families are squeezed at the pump, in the grocery store, and when they pay their mortgage, every sacrifice at-home volunteers make weighs heavy," Foster said.
"I am supporting the people who work tirelessly and unconditionally for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. These volunteers spend their precious time and money committed to U.S. servicemen and servicewomen by making an extraordinary effort to keep them comfortable. This bill works to bring our volunteers some relief.

"By receiving a small care package filled with Jolly Ranchers and beef jerky, or toiletries, sun block lotion, and magazines that we all take for granted, these volunteers make our troops' day just a little better, giving them a slight relief from the hazards of living in a war zone in 120-degree heat."

The first bill would provide a tax credit of up to $500 for individuals who send care packages, through the America Supports You program's sanctioned organizations, to non-relative soldiers serving in combat zones.

The second bill would grant tax incentives for volunteers who perform service activities for military families who have a soldier deployed overseas. In order to receive the $500 maximum tax credit annually a volunteer would have to do at least 10 hours per week for four weeks in an America Supports You program accredited organization. The tax credit is based on hourly service, and pegged to the minimum wage as set by Congress.

"Our troops deserve our gratitude and support, as do the volunteers who work to give our servicemen and servicewomen the small comforts of home," Foster said. "Providing these tax credits are an effort to honor, respect, and support these volunteers whose service to our soldiers is so essential. I'm working to recognize the work of these patriots."
