Sen. Cornyn Introduces Bill To Preserve Resaca De La Palma As Historic Site

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, has introduced legislation to amend the boundary of the Palo Alto Battlefield to include the Resaca de la Palma site and pay homage to the U.S. and Mexican soldiers who gave their lives in the historic, second engagement of the Mexican-American War.

"Thousands of U.S. and Mexican soldiers fought to defend their respective nations in the battle of Resaca de la Palma, and many lost their lives that day in service to their country. Sadly, more than 160 years later, the battlefield has yet to receive the historic designation that many other similar battlefields and sites across the country have been afforded," Sen. Cornyn said.

"I'm pleased to introduce federal legislation that would finally give Resaca de la Palma the recognition and protection it deserves. The site serves as an important part of the colorful fabric of our nations' shared history. It is sacred ground where both Mexican and American heroes made the ultimate sacrifice to defend their land and countrymen.

"Out of respect to those lives and our nations' long and rich history, I hope my colleagues in the Senate will join me in acting quickly to officially preserve Resaca de la Palma's important place in Mexican-American history."

Sen. Cornyn's legislation is the companion to legislation introduced in the House of Representatives by U.S. Rep Solomon Ortiz, D-Corpus Christi.
