Markey Introduces Resolution to Block US-Russia Nuclear Cooperation Agreement

Today, Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA), is introducing a resolution to block the recently negotiated Agreement for Nuclear Cooperation between the United States and Russia. In a letter to House Members, Rep. Markey, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Co-Chair of the House Bipartisan Task Force on Nonproliferation, outlined Russia's deep and continuing cooperation with Iran's nuclear and missile programs as leading reasons why Russia should not benefit from nuclear cooperation with the United States.

Rep. Markey said, "Does Russia want nuclear cooperation with the United States, or with Iran? Because it can't have both. Russia's nuclear, missile, and advanced conventional weapons cooperation with Iran makes it absolutely inconceivable that the United States would enter into nuclear cooperation with Moscow.

"President Bush should have heeded the wide bipartisan warnings not to submit this agreement to the Congress. Instead, the administration now faces a stiff fight against this unnecessary and ill-considered agreement," Rep. Markey concluded.

The Congress received the agreement from the White House yesterday. Rep. Markey has repeatedly raised concerns about this deal with the Bush administration.
