Rep. Courtney Announces $2.4 million Federal Grant for Killingly Sewer Collection System

Congressman Courtney announced today that the Town of Killingly has received a $2,141,000 grant and a $5,600,000 loan from the United States Department of Agriculture. The Town of Killingly will use the funds to replace their existing sewer collection system.

The Town of Killingly will use the funds secured from USDA to replace completely their currently deteriorated sewer collection system. Their current sewer system is plagued with cracked pipes, offset joints, root intrusions and leaking manholes. The overhaul of their sewer collection system was originally proposed in a 2004 engineering study.

"Obviously, in a growing town like Killingly that has been successfully expanding their economic base, a stable infrastructure is crucial to attracting businesses and residents" Courtney said. "Left unimproved, cracked pipes and a poor sewer system can lead to potential ground water contamination and public health risk. This grant will allow Killingly to reinvest in their community and the benefits will be substantial."

"The Town of Killingly is pleased that USDA has made a commitment to reserve funds for a project recommended by the Town in a 2004 engineering study" stated Bruce Benway, Town Manager for the Town of Killingly. "This is the first step in a long process but we are thrilled to have a partner in Washington."
