Rep. Courtney's Eightmile River Preservation Bill Heads to White House for President's Signature After House Passage

Congressman Courtney's bill, H.R. 986, the "Eightmile Wild and Scenic Rivers," has overcome partisan stonewalling to pass the House of Representatives a second time and now makes its way to the White House to be signed into law by the President.

"After many years fighting for the preservation of the Eightmile River, local advocates may soon have their victory," stated Courtney. "I am pleased to have successfully ushered this bill through the House, but the credit belongs to the local residents who made the conservation of our local environment a relentless priority. I thank my colleague Senator Dodd for his leadership on this issue in the Senate and urge the President to sign this measure into law as quickly as possible."

"Today, Congress has reaffirmed its commitment to preserve a pristine environmental treasure and a precious natural habitat," said Dodd. "I applaud Representative Courtney for his tremendous work to see this bill through to passage in the House, and I urge President Bush to quickly act and sign this important measure into law. The preservation and protection of the Eightmile River should not be delayed another day."
