Sen. Cornyn Highlights Values, Efforts Of Texas Migrant Council

Participates In Ribbon-Cutting For TMC School Named In His Honor

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today attended the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Senator John Cornyn Texas Migrant Seasonal Head Start School. The school, with more than 220 students currently enrolled, was renamed in Sen. Cornyn's honor due to his continued support for the Texas Migrant Council (TMC) and its initiatives.

Sen. Cornyn met with students, families, teachers, leadership of TMC, and several local leaders, including U.S. Judge Ricardo H. Hinojosa, Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell, Palmview Mayor Jorge Garcia, and Mission City Council member Ruben Plata. Sen. Cornyn highlighted the efforts of TMC and community leaders in educating and caring for the children and families of migrant farm workers.

"From workforce training to early childhood development, the Texas Migrant Council has been making a positive difference in the lives of thousands of migrant farm workers and their families for more than 30 years. By instilling the values of family, personal responsibility, and education, TMC works to build up individuals and communities and equip them with the tools to succeed," Sen. Cornyn said.

Sen. Cornyn has consistently supported TMC's initiatives. In 2005, he successfully assisted TMC in securing $4.2 million in Head Start expansion funding that in turn allowed them to serve an additional 562 children.

TMC receives most of its federal funding through the Migrant and Seasonal Head Start program. This program is tailored to meet the specific needs of migrant and seasonal farm worker families. Children and infants as young as six weeks are cared for by TMC schools, while their parents are working. In addition to educational services and child care, TMC also provides services in family literacy, consumer education, and prenatal care.
