Issue Position: Choice

People should make decisions, not the government. The government should not interfere in people lives.

The basic issue is whether or not you believe that the people have the ability to make decisions on how they should live their lives. You either believe that the people have the ability and should make their own decisions or that someone from government should tell them what to do. This really is the gist of the disagreement between my opponent and me. If you believe in liberty and choice, you will agree with most of what is said below and should vote for me. If you feel that people are not capable of making their own decisions, you will disagree and you should vote for my opponent.

Many politicians, even though they say they support freedom and choice, demonstrate that they do not really support freedom by the policies that they advocate. Every law or regulation that restricts the ability of a person to make his or her own choice reduces freedom. This does not mean that every regulation is bad. It does mean that laws and regulations must be closely monitored to insure that the increase in the common good is worth the loss of freedom.

The Soviet Union's communist system was based on total control of people and the economy. You were told where to work and where to live. They had to build a wall to keep people from leaving. That system collapsed under its own weight.

On the other hand, the United States was based on the concept of freedom. The United States' political system is one of the most successful and long lasting systems ever developed.

And of course, I firmly believe we need to reduce the size of government. I believe that individuals can make and should have the right to make choices regarding their own destiny. I firmly believe that in most cases, an individual will make a better choice than a government official on what is best for the individual. If you send me to Washington, I will base all votes on whether the issue is better solved by the individual, then the town, then the State, and finally the United States Government.
