Statement of U.S. Senator Dick Durbin Regarding Eradication of Asian Longhorned Beetle

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement regarding the eradication of the Asian Longhorned Beetle from the State of Illinois.

"I commend the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the City of Chicago on this important milestone. I am proud that my colleagues in Congress and I were able to play a role in this fight - securing more than $8 million to combat the Asian Longhorned Beetle and to plant new trees since the problem was discovered almost ten years ago."

Funding for eradicating the Asian Longhorned Beetle problem was secured by Senator Durbin and others through federal appropriations bills since 2000. The funds were directed through the City of Chicago and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to conduct field research and to mobilize efforts to identify, remove and dispose of infested trees. Additional funding was secured for the Chicago GreenStreets Program to improve urban forestry in the City of Chicago and replace infected trees.
