I support HR 676 -- a proposal for a single payer healthcare system for America.

We need to fix our broken health care system. I am deeply troubled that we continue to have a health care system that, unlike every other industrialized county in the world, is unaffordable to a large percentage of individuals and small businesses, and is increasingly bankrupting our country. I believe that health care is a basic right, and that mustering the political will to change it is one of the most important tasks of the next Congress.

It is one thing to call for change in the healthcare system and it is another to fight for it. When I proposed MaineRx to make prescription drugs more affordable for Mainers, the pharmaceutical industry attacked, and tried to stop the proposal. We didn't back down and eventually won in a fight went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

After the next election, if Democrats control the White House and Congress and fail to pass substantive healthcare reform, they don't deserve to govern.
