Rogers Secures Funding for Literacy Initiative

U.S. Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) announced today that he secured $243,000 in federal funds for southern and eastern Kentucky's education initiative, "Forward in the Fifth." The President signed the bill into law late last year as part of a wider measure funding nearly all federal government operations for 2008.

"It's easy to take literacy for granted," said Rogers. "But for some, circumstances thwarted educational opportunities along the way. We must continue working to ensure that anyone who is willing to learn and better themselves has the opportunity to do so."

Forward in the Fifth, founded in 1986, is a nonprofit organization that serves 41 counties in southern and eastern Kentucky. The goal of this program is to improve educational opportunities throughout the region. Primary activities center on increasing parent involvement in the schools and development programs for students.

As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, Rogers works to secure funding for important initiatives in the fifth Congressional district.
