Graves Says No to Gas Tax

U.S. Congressman Sam Graves announced his opposition to a proposal by Democratic Congressman John Dingell to raise the gasoline tax by 50 cents per gallon.

"With Missourians facing record prices at the pump, raising the gas tax is the wrong thing to do," said Graves. "We need to be working to reduce the price of gas, not increase it."

Graves is responding to legislation currently being drafted my Rep. John Dingell, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, to raise the tax on gasoline by 50 cents per gallon. Dingell is currently plans to introduce it in November.

"Increasing the tax burden on motorists, hurts our families and hurts our economy," Graves continued. "We need an energy policy that reduces the prices that Missourians pay at the pump by tapping into the sources of energy we have in this country."

Rep. Dingell's proposal would increase the federal gas tax from 18.4 cent per gallon tax on regular and unleaded gasoline to 68.4 cents per gallon. The proposal would also increase the federal tax on diesel fuel from 24.4 cent per gallon to 74.4 per gallon.
