Moran Statement on the Resignation of Fidel Castro

Congressman Jerry Moran today issued the following statement after the announcement that Cuban President Fidel Castro would resign from office later this month.

"This day has been a long time coming. The decision by President Castro to depart from office should initiate a departure from the unsuccessful U.S. embargo. This is a great opportunity for the U.S. government to encourage economic changes that will give the Cuban people a long-sought improvement in their living standards and a new market for farmers and ranchers in Kansas. Five decades of economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation has not forced change in Cuba's government. We should not let five more decades pass. The United States should be a part of writing this new chapter in the lives of the Cuban people."
