CORNYN: RECORD JOB GROWTH SHOWS STRONG ECONOMIC RECOVERY

Workforce adds 308,000 jobs in March, most in four years

WASHINGTON-U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, said the record job growth announced Friday is a sign of a strong economic recovery. The workforce added 308,000 jobs in March, according to the Labor Department, the largest increase in four years.

"This announcement of new jobs more than doubling expectations is great news, but not unexpected. For a long time we've seen the economy roaring back as a result of the leadership of President Bush and the tax relief passed last year by Republicans, relief that Democrats have been trying to repeal at a time when the economy could least afford tax increases," Cornyn said.

Cornyn added: "Despite the robust growth numbers, naysayers of our economy say there is no hope, no bright opportunity for the American worker - their claims are even less credible today. For all their down-talking about the economy, the economy is not listening. And more important American workers are not listening because they're seeing the real results of positive leadership from Republicans in Congress and the positive results of President Bush's leadership on tax relief and growth."

Job growth for January and February was revised upward by an additional 80,000 jobs above what was previously projected.

Cornyn continues to work for job growth by supporting the job training and community college initiatives that President Bush has endorsed. He's traveled to Houston, Austin, Amarillo, and Harlingen to highlight the workforce training programs at community colleges in those cities, and will visit Victoria and Bryan-College Station on Saturday.

"We in government must continue to take all the steps necessary to support free market innovation, encourage job creation, and get our economy growing again. We need to make America and Texas the most business and jobs friendly places on the planet," Cornyn said.
