PRESIDENT SIGNS LAW TO PROTECT UNBORN VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE

Another key step toward building a culture that values every human life, Cornyn says

WASINGTON-U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, applauded President Bush Thursday for signing the bipartisan Unborn Victims of Violence Act, H.R. 1997. The law will protect unborn children from assault and murder by allowing prosecutors to bring criminal charges on behalf of the unborn victim. Sen. Cornyn co-sponsored the Senate version of the legislation. The Unborn Victims of Violence Act passed last week in the Senate by a vote of 61-38.

"After passing the partial-birth abortion ban last year, this is another key step toward building a culture that values every human life, from conception to natural death. Children are precious gifts and should be protected by the full extent of the law from such brutal and vicious acts," Cornyn said. "I was proud to co-sponsor this bill in the Senate, which establishes that if an unborn child is injured or killed during a violent crime, prosecutors may bring a charge on behalf of that unborn person."
