Murphy Statement on New Britain Home Invasion and Shooting

Statement

Date: April 1, 2008
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) released the following statement on the home invasion in New Britain that led to the death of Mary Ellen Welsh.

"My heart and my prayers go out to the family and friends of Mary Ellen Welsh and the New Britain community in these difficult days. This crime is reprehensible on its own, and it's even more incomprehensible as the memory of the horrific crimes against the Petit family in Cheshire is still fresh in our minds.

"These senseless crimes threaten so much more than our homes and families - they shatter our sense of safety and security in our communities. The people of Connecticut invest so much in their neighborhoods, and they deserve to know they can sleep soundly in them.

"Our laws should not only punish heinous crimes, but prevent them as well. In the coming days and weeks and months, we will renew the dialogue over how best to avert - and fully punish - these kinds of offenses."
