Murphy Statement after Meeting with Air Force on Tanker Contract

Statement

Date: March 14, 2008
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) released the following statement after this morning's Connecticut delegation meeting with the Air Force concerning their decision to contract with a foreign company to replace the KC-135 refueling tanker.

"I appreciate the Air Force's quick response to our request for a meeting on their decision to outsource this contract. I listened to the Air Force's presentation, and I left unsatisfied with the methodology they used to make this decision and confident that the Boeing - Pratt & Whitney proposal was of the highest standard and merit.

"It's unacceptable to me that our own Armed Forces don't consider the future of our American defense production capability in awarding contracts. With the award of this contract, we will see the lions share of work on this project go overseas, while we leave our capable skilled defense workforce idle, and that is unacceptable for our national security and our economy. I will urge my colleagues in Congress to continue to look into this matter and consider steps to overturn it."
