Rep. Courtney Calls on State of New York to Deny Broadwater Proposal, Reject FERC Approval

Congressman Joe Courtney released the following statement responding to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) decision to approve the Broadwater Energy liquefied natural gas barge proposed for the Long Island Sound.

"The FERC decision is just plain wrong because the quarter-mile long barge is not appropriate for the Long Island Sound and will not reduce the costs of fuel for Connecticut's families," stated Courtney. "I urge the State of New York to exercise its right to reject this proposal as the risks of this ill-conceived project outweigh any of the benefits."

Congressman Courtney has consistently opposed the Shell and TransCanada proposed project since his entrance to Congress.

In 2007, Representatives Courtney, DeLauro, and Long Island colleague Tim Bishop introduced legislation to stop FERC from carrying out the application review process.

Congressman Courtney and the Connecticut delegation sent a letter to the United States Coast Guard expressing concerns about the burden that would be placed on the Guard's resources if Broadwater were approved.

Congressman Courtney and the delegation also addressed their concerns directly to the FERC, even as recently as February 8 of this year.
