Today, two weeks before the April 15 deadline to file 2007 tax returns, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) reminded all 11th district residents to file a return. This includes those such as seniors and veterans who don't need to file a tax return for tax purposes but must this year to receive a federal government rebate check.
As a result of the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 which the Congress passed and the President signed into law, the U.S. Treasury will begin in May to send economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households.
To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 federal tax return. Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17. Millions of retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers who usually are exempt from filing a tax return, but earn at least $3,000 in qualifying income, must do so this year in order to receive a $300 stimulus payment.
After filing a 2007 tax return, the Internal Revenue Service will send rebate checks or deposit the funds directly into the accounts of those who have selected that option.
