Issue Position

As a member of both the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Environment and Public Works Committee, Senator Sanders is well positioned to fight for progressive energy polices and increased environmental protection. In fact, the first bill Sanders introduced as a member of the U.S. Senate offered a bold plan to address global warming and make the United States a leader in sustainable and energy efficient technologies.

Sanders' Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act (which he introduced with Senator Barbara Boxer, chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee as well as others) would implement aggressive policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avert the most catastrophic changes associated with global warming. In addition, the bill would make the United States a leader in energy efficient technologies and create millions of good paying jobs in the process. Sustainable energy sources, like solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, as well as energy efficient technologies, including compact fluorescent light bulbs and efficient appliances are vital and cost-effective tools in the battle against global warming. Sanders is committed to promoting these technologies and continuing to find new opportunities to promote clean energy.

With the best scientists in the U.S. and abroad in near unanimous agreement about the need for action to combat global warming, the time is now for aggressive and comprehensive action by Congress. Senator Bernie Sanders has received high honors for his pro-environment record, including a 100% 2006 rating from the League of Conservation Voters.
