David Orentlicher: A Proven Record of Making a Difference for Indiana Families

David Orentlicher is a principled leader who knows that Indiana's future depends on the strength of its families, schools, businesses, and communities. And he has a proven record of finding solutions that make a difference for Indiana's families.
For the last six years, David has represented the northside of Indianapolis in the Indiana House of Representatives where he has played a major role in policies affecting job creation, access to health care, and the protection of children. He was named "Best Legislator" in 2007 by NUVO newsweekly for his work on property tax reform, reproductive rights, and equality for all persons.

A doctor and a lawyer, David teaches courses in medical ethics and constitutional law at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. He also is an adjunct professor at Indiana University School of Medicine where he serves on the faculty of the Center for Bioethics. Previously, David worked at the American Medical Association, directing its division of medical ethics. While there, he drafted the AMA's first ever Patients' Bill of Rights.

David graduated from Harvard Medical School and then completed an internship in internal medicine. After practicing as a family physician, he returned to Harvard for law school.

David lives in Indianapolis with his wife Judy, also a professor at Indiana University, their son Cy, and daughter Shayna. He is a board member for his neighborhood association, the Highland-Kessler Civic League. David also serves on the board of the MLK Multi-Service Center, the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and the Damien Center, a non-profit organization that works to prevent the spread of HIV and to provide services for people infected with HIV.

David, Judy, Cy and Shayna belong to Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, where David has taught in the Sunday School and served on the board of directors.
